what is bhangra?

Bhangra is one of the most joyous and festive forms of dance originating from the northwestern region of Punjab in the Indian subcontinent. Bhangra dance is a more than 500 year old historical dance, traditionally carried by peasants when they would celebrate the harvest. Movements in bhangra dance also reflects the growing, picking and harvesting in the field. It was mostly men who performed bhangra dance while the ladies danced their own more elegant dance called Giddha.
The two main instruments of bhangra music is a Dhol, a drum with very heavy beats and a tumbi with more soft rhythms. Both instruments are a symbol of life, culture and traditions of the people of Punjab region. It was celebrated that one now had survived yet another harvest and could now support the family for a whole year until the next harvest season. Both these instruments are very popular in modern punjabimusik and especially dholinstrumentet is today used in the music of other regions in Asia and internationally.
Bhangra dance has over the last 30 years evolved from being only a dance and music from Punjab- region to a style that is becoming increasingly popular worldwide. Besides the traditional form, you will also find bhangra as a mixture of genres such as hip-hop, funk, house and reggae. More and more people of non-Punjabi background love to dance to and listen to the very energetic bhangra music. Universities and other organizations hold annual bhangra dance competitions in many of the largest cities in the United States, Canada and England, where many young people with different cultural backgrounds participate with great joy. Previously, bhangra described as a male dance, but today it will be danced by both men and women dancing together in groups and perform together for festive events.
